Historical Notes
The AN-Mk 17 series depth bombs feature a round nose welded to a cylindrical steel tube with a strengthening disc at the nose and reinforced suspension lugs. A flat-nose attachment (bucket-style, plaster-filled) was used to prevent ricochet and improve underwater trajectory, adding approximately 44 lbs to the bomb weight.
The AN-Mk 41 and AN-Mk 47 variants use a flat nose with a three-piece body and transverse fuze pocket tube welded 15 inches abaft the nose. All variants use a distinctive drum tail with four fins spot-welded to a cone and shroud, bolted to the bomb base.
TNT-loaded bombs are stenciled in yellow; Torpex-loaded bombs in blue.
